The years 1912-1913 see the beginning of a new wave of books design in the Czech Lands that bears a striking resemblance to the architecture and furniture of what has traditionally been called Czech cubism. A number of exhibitions and publications, especially in the past decade, have shown that Czech cubism is an original phenomenon, above all in the area of architecture and applied arts, but curiously, a detailed account of cubist book art is still missing. The present study is an attempt to fill this gap. It provides basic information about the Czech cubist book design, its practitioners and perception, and shows, among other things, that the initial period left a distinct trace in the 1920s. The study presents a corpus of nearly two hundred selected images, focusing mainly on book covers and, to a limited degree, posters.
